Príncipe Real

Príncipe Real is located in the heart of Lisbon, near the Botanical Gardens, Bairro Alto and only 15 minutes walk from Chiado.

In the mid-nineteenth the city's pig market was held there, and between 1856 and 1868 it housed the old Amoreiras fair. The first alignment of a square began in the late '60s, a few park benches, and later a garden.

The garden occupies the site where, since 1755, stood the Patriarchal Church, which was destroyed by a fire fourteen years later.

In the center of the square is a circular lake surrounded by rose bushes, under which lies the Patriarchal Reservoir, part of the Water Museum, that holds various cultural activities and visits.

It is a garden rich in many species of trees, many of which are identified. The highlight goes to the monumental Cedar, with more than 20 meters in diameter, ex-libris of the garden.

There are also three kiosks, two of which have a sporadic use, and the third one with a cafeteria service.

Around the garden one can see several nineteenth-century mansions, like the neo-Arabic Palace Ribeiro da Cunha.

On the north side, there is a balcony from where you can see part of Lisbon, with the Basilica da Estrela in the background.
